CFF Announces This Year’s Good Neighbors

Posted on | April 25, 2012 | No Comments

By: Kat Bruner James, Chair of Citizens for a Fair Ferndale (CFF)

(Article originally published in April 2012 edition of Ferndale Friends)

Yet again, the CFF Good Neighbors = Strong Community Awards (GNA) Committee had the pleasure of reviewing a great number of worthy nominations. Every year, we are deeply touched by the thoughtful submissions that we receive. This year was no exception, and it was a difficult task to narrow it down to this year’s award winners.

For those are not yet familiar with the awards, in 2004, CFF began the GNAs to recognize people in Ferndale who support CFF’s objectives in their everyday lives. Award winners are recognized by their actions—no matter how big or small—that promote quality and the mission of CFF (see below). We especially wanted to give a nod to those who are not often recognized for their efforts; there are so many people who are not necessarily public figures who are just as important to the strength of our community. You can learn more about the awards at our website, www.fairferndale.org.

We are so proud that the GNAs have become known within the community, and we are so grateful for those who have taken the time to nominate the people who make Ferndale the welcoming, wonderful place that it is.

Without further ado, CFF is pleased to announce this year’s winners: Dean Bach (of Dino’s), Kate Baker, Elie Boudt and Nuria Garrote, Ron Gilmour, the Good Family (Linda, Lynn, Lisa, and Michael), Don Hagle (of J & D Auto), Barb and Pat Landry, Jason McIntosh and Jim Shaffer, Ann Warner, and Butch Yuhas.  Go Comedy will also be recognized as the fourth CFF “Community Partner,” a special award that goes to a person or business selected by CFF (not necessarily nominated from outside of the group) for their direct participation in promoting CFF’s efforts.

The Good Neighbors Awards event will be held in May, and we will have more to report following the event.  Be sure to “stay tuned.”

More CFF events coming up:

CFF will host a discussion brunch in the very near future (details TBA) focusing on the issues raised in the documentary Miss Representation. CFF will also be announcing a very big project that will (hopefully) involve a huge number of groups in the community and provide the building blocks for even more forward progress in Ferndale. Intrigued? Watch Ferndale Friends and our Facebook page for further announcements (find us on Facebook by searching “fairferndale”).

The mission of Citizen’s for a Fair Ferndale is to foster a community that is dedicated to the fair and equal treatment of all residents and visitors regardless of sexual orientation, race, color, religion, gender, age, height, weight, familial status, national origin, physical or mental disability.  Check our website or email CFF48220@gmail.com for more information.

Citizens for a Fair Ferndale Organizing Carpool to Miss Representation Screening and Panel Discussion at Oakland University on March 24. Will Host Local Brunch to Discuss Film.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 3/13/12; Contact (248) 219-9646

On Saturday, March 24 at noon (201 Dodge Hall, Oakland University Campus in Rochester), Oakland University’s Women and Gender Studies Program is sponsoring a screening of Miss Representation. The film’s website (www.missrepresentation.org) says, “Like drawing back a curtain to let bright light stream in, Miss Representation (90 min; TV-14 DL) uncovers a glaring reality we live with every day but fail to see. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.”

Please register for the film by Friday, March 16 by calling Graciela Osterberg, Women and Gender Studies Program, Oakland University; phone- (248) 370-2154 or email- osterber@oakland.edu. The event is FREE, but donations to Oakland University are appreciated by the sponsors. See www.oakland.edu/?id=19517&sid=308 for more info.

Citizens for a Fair Ferndale (CFF) invites anyone who would like to attend the screening to meet at Drayton Avenue Presbyterian Church (2441 Pinecrest, Ferndale) at 11:00 am to carpool to the screening. There is a two-hour panel discussion following the movie, so participants should decide in advance whether they wish to stay for that portion and coordinate rides accordingly. CFF is planning a follow up event (tentatively a potluck brunch) on a date to be announced and will invite anyone who has seen the film to come and discuss it further.

Other local screenings of the film can be found at http://www.missrepresentation.org/mr-screenings/category/michigan/upcoming/; it will also be released on DVD on April 10.

CFF’s mission is to foster a community that is dedicated to the fair and equal treatment of all residents and visitors regardless of sexual orientation, race, color, religion, gender, age, height, weight, familial status, national origin, physical or mental disability.

Examples of previous honorees include diverse individuals, organizations and businesses which have coordinated and planned picnics, festivals, and events in the community; promoted volunteerism; created inclusive, welcoming environments in their businesses; collaborated on art projects that celebrate diversity; tutored foreign-born Americans; sheltered the homeless; creatively overcame personal challenges while striving to help others; established book club networks; spoken out against injustice in our community.
